Who are we?

About us

CITÉ (the Interdisciplinary Coalition for an Ecological Transition, or Coalition interdisciplinaire pour une transition écologique) is a non-profit organization created in 2020 by ESG UQAM students. It was born out of the need to bring together different disciplines to tackle environmental and social thinking in all its complexity.

CITÉ aims to be a laboratory, including at the level of governance, by adopting a sociocratic system that allows for accountability in decision-making.

Vision

In a context where climate change, biodiversity loss and social inequalities are accelerating, CITÉ understands the urgency to act with accountability to current and future generations. At its level, CITÉ aims to raise awareness in the student community and society at large, but also to influence the decision-making process of businesses and governments.

For me, being part of CITE is part of a citizen mobilization, it is teamwork in action and it is the search for innovative solutions to environmental and social justice, with the goal of a healthier future.

Since I was a child, I was concerned about environmental and social issues. CITÉ has allowed me to find people who share the same values as me, who are curious by nature and who want to participate in the creation of a better world.

What is sociocraty?

Sociocraty at CITÉ

Sociocracy is a form of organization, communication and decision-making that breaks with the notion of hierarchy. It is an exercise that is both very concrete in terms of operations and very personal, and that questions our relationship with others and our reflexes of competition and domination. We at CITÉ all have the same decision-making power: we are free and accountable in our choices. Leadership at meetings is rotational so that no one is left out and no one benefits from instituted authority. Any idea can be suggested and debated at our meetings. If someone commits to follow up on an idea, the project is then integrated into our actions.

It is not until we eliminate domination in all its forms that we will really create a rational, ecological society.” – Murray Bookchin
